Child safety standards
Last updated: 24 September 2026
Letterbird has zero tolerance for child sexual abuse and exploitation. Accounts that share or ask for such content, or that try to groom a young member, are closed and reported to the authorities.
To report a concern, use Report on the letter in the app, or email [email protected] with "Child safety" in the subject.
Our commitment
Letterbird is open to people aged 13 and over. We design the app so that young members can enjoy writing to pen pals without being exposed to adults who want to harm them. We prohibit child sexual abuse material (CSAM), and any content or behaviour that sexualises, grooms or exploits a child.
How we protect members aged 13 to 17
- Separate age groups. Members aged 13 to 17 can only be matched with, and can only write to, other members aged 13 to 17. This also applies to letters sent by ID.
- Birth dates are locked. A member can't change their birth date in the app to move into another age group.
- No photos, no live chat. Members can't send photos, and there is no instant messaging. Letters arrive hours later, which makes pressure and manipulation harder.
- Little personal information. Members are identified by a short ID or a name they choose. Profiles show a country and an age group, never an exact age, city or location.
- Block and report. Any member can block another with one tap and report any letter.
- Human review. Our team reviews reports, with child safety reports handled first.
What is not allowed
- Sharing, requesting or linking to sexual content involving anyone under 18.
- Sexual or romantic messages to members aged 13 to 17.
- Asking a young member for photos, their phone number, address, school or social media, or asking them to keep secrets or move to another app.
- Lying about your age to reach younger members.
How we respond
When we find or are told about a violation, we remove the content, close the account, keep the information needed for an investigation, and report it to the relevant authorities, including the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) where applicable and law enforcement in the member's country. We cooperate with lawful requests from authorities.
How to report
- In the app, open the letter and choose Report. Pick the reason that fits best.
- You can also email [email protected] with "Child safety" in the subject. Include the member's ID and what happened.
- If a child is in immediate danger, contact your local police first.
