Getting started

What is Letterbird?

Letterbird is a pen pal app for slow letters. You write to someone across the world, choose an envelope and a stamp, and the letter takes a few hours to arrive. There is no feed, no likes and no follower counts: only your mailbox.

Who can use Letterbird?

Anyone aged 13 or over. Members aged 13 to 17 are only ever matched with, and can only write to, other members aged 13 to 17. Adults never see or write to teen accounts.

Where can I get the app?

The Android app is on Google Play. The iPhone app is coming by 31 October 2026. Until then you can read and write on your computer at web.letterbird.app.

Can I use Letterbird on my computer?

Yes. Open web.letterbird.app and scan the code with the app on your phone (menu, then Letterbird Web). You can read, reply and write from there. Accounts are created in the app.

Is Letterbird free?

Yes. Every day you can send up to 4 letters and 4 postcards for free. Coins and Premium are optional and add extra designs and faster delivery; they are never needed to keep writing.

Letters and postcards

Why do letters take hours to arrive?

Waiting is part of it. Delivery time depends on the distance between your country and theirs: usually 3 to about 7 hours. Premium letters arrive a little sooner, and express delivery (30 to 90 minutes) can be added with coins.

How long does a letter have to be?

A letter needs at least 512 characters, which is about a short page. There is no upper limit, so write as much as you like.

What is the difference between a letter and a postcard?

A postcard is a short note of 20 to 100 characters with a picture on the front and the stamp on the back. Postcards have their own daily limit, so they never use up your letters.

Can I get a letter back after I send it?

No. Like real mail, once a letter is on its way it will be delivered. Read it over before you send it.

Can I reply more than once?

Each letter can be answered once, with a letter or a postcard. When the reply arrives, you can answer that one, and so on. Your conversation is kept together as a thread.

Can I write in my own language?

Yes. Letters can be in any language and any script. The app picks a font that supports it, and you can list the languages you speak so we match you with people who share them.

What are open letters?

An open letter introduces you to people you have not written to yet. Anyone in your age group can read it and reply. It stays up for 5 days, 5 replies or 100 reads, whichever comes first, and needs at least 640 characters.

Pen pals and safety

How do you find pen pals for me?

You set the languages, countries, age range and interests you want. We suggest people who fit, who are active and who want the same kind of conversation. You can also write to anyone whose ID or letterbird.me link you have.

Who can write to me?

Pen pals you are matched with, people who reply to your open letter, and anyone who knows your ID or your letterbird.me link. You can block anyone, and you can turn off anonymous letters in Settings.

What is letterbird.me?

Your own link, like letterbird.me/yourname. Anyone can send you a letter or postcard there without an account. These arrive as anonymous mail. Members aged 13 to 17 cannot receive anonymous mail.

How do you keep teens safe?

Teens only ever meet other teens. Letters from members aged 13 to 17 are checked before sending, and phone numbers, email addresses, links and social media names are blocked. Reported letters are reviewed by our team. See our child safety standards.

How do I block or report someone?

Open a letter from them and use the menu at the top: Block stops all their letters, Report sends the letter to our team. They are not told who reported them.

Can I send photos?

No, and that is on purpose. Letterbird is about words. Leaving out photos also keeps conversations safer, especially for teens.

Stamps, map and badges

What do I collect?

Every stamp, envelope and postcard on the letters you receive goes into your album, with where it first came from. Some stamps are rare, and some come in series you can complete.

What does the map show?

The countries your letters came from and went to, as a heat map for this year or all time, plus the letters that are still on their way. Your passport gets a stamp for every new country. Anonymous letters appear in the ocean: the sender's country is never shown.

What are badges?

Small milestones, like your first letter, ten countries or a year of writing. You can choose three to show on your profile.

Coins and Premium

What are coins for?

Coins buy extra envelopes, stamps, papers, wax seals and postmarks, and add options to a letter: express delivery, a read receipt or scheduled delivery. You get some by completing your profile and by watching short videos, or you can buy them.

What does Premium include, and does it renew?

Premium raises your daily limits (8 letters and 6 postcards), makes letters arrive sooner and includes read receipts, a second stamp and Premium papers, fonts and inks. It is a one-time purchase for 1, 3 or 12 months and never renews by itself. When it ends you simply go back to the free plan.

Your account

Who can see my email or birth date?

Nobody. Other members see your ID, avatar, country, age group, languages and the profile you write. Read the privacy policy for the details.

How do I delete my account?

In the app, go to Settings and choose Delete account. You have 30 days to change your mind, then it is deleted for good. You can also request deletion here.

Still have a question? Write to us at [email protected]. In the app you can also go to Settings and choose Report something.
